Lettere Americane 10.

Ryan, allena tutti i miei clienti ex militari”.

I nostri allenamenti iniziano sempre in ritardo perché parlo troppo…

Lettere Americane 10: An Unleashed Life: Addio’ Manassas Park

By: Robert Ruffolo, MBA, MPL

Dear Editor,

I would like to tell you a little bit about where I have been living and my life for the last five years, it’s called Manassas Park (MP) Virginia. Living in one place doesn’t sound challenging but, when you consider that in my previous career field that I moved twenty three times in twenty nine years, you can understand the impact.  For those who don’t know me (yet) I am retired Army Officer and chose this town because of a great apartment complex, proximity to the VRE (regional train that in thirty nine minutes puts you next to the Pentagon) and what the neighborhood had to offer.  While living in MP, I completed a Loyola Chicago MBA (shuttling back and forth to Chicago) and a Georgetown University Masters, and I am deeply grateful for the opportunity and hometown neighborhood of MP that allowed me to complete those degrees.

Studying continuously for those degrees, made me sedentary. To ease my study stress, I started walking 8-12 miles a day during COVID (what else was there to do?).  I lost 20 pounds but lacked the appropriate musculature in my upper body and core.  Clearly time for a change, I started my fitness journey in November 2020.

Fitness is huge in America, Arthur Zuckerman wrote in 2020 an article where he highlights some statistics that give illumination on this growing American trend.

“The demographics include 33% of Millennials, 24% of Gen Xers, and 22% of Baby Boomers. 14% of Gen Zers and 7% of the Silent Generation also have gym memberships.  More than one in five Americans (21.2%) belonged to a health club or studio in 2019, or a total of 64.2 million members aged 6 or older [out of 340 million Americans].” (Zuckerman, 2020).

As you can see, fitness is important to Americans across all generations.

Down the street from where I live is a great gym called Unleashed Strength.  What made me want to try that gym instead of a large commercial chain, was a Washington Post article written on the gym during COVID  (by Stephanie Murray in May 2020) which touted the importance of the gym to the community.  Clients were paying their subscriptions even during COVID despite not being able to use the facility, an inspiring testament to the familial environment clients experienced at Unleashed Strength.  Stephanie’s article was so touching it inspired me to check out this gym.   So, I walked the 700 meters up the hill from my apartment to the gym and was met by one of the co-owners.

Joe Strada greeted me as I came in the door, an imposing 6ft+ highly muscled Italian American, with a genuine smile. Despite his size, he instantly puts you at ease and welcomes you into the gym’s familial environment.  He and his wife Margo have created a unique boutique “cheers like” gym, where “everyone knows your name.”  I described who I was, the wounds I had from 29 years of Army service and asked for a personal trainer to help me recover my body.  Joe, (his family is from Abruzzo) responded without a heartbeat passing between us, “I will hook you up with Ryan, he trains all my ex-military clients.”

Now, who would think that 30 year old Ryan Shepard would be another southern Italian American (Abruzzese)… and also from the same western Pennsylvania (PA) town as my (then) wife.  Coincidence? An intervention…? or divine energy playing in the background??

Ryan and I bonded instantly, discussing PA, the local restaurants (Palumbo’s, and Jardine’s), PA traditions (such as Rolling Rock and Yuengling beer), and our common southern Italian heritage.  This was the beginning of a cultural journey for both of us, the start of a special friendship. Ryan assessed me, took both my diagnostic and manual tape measurements.  I weighed in at post-COVID walk weight of 203 lbs., Body Fat mass of 59.1 lbs. and Body fat percentage of 29.1, not my best fighting shape for sure. I was bloated, my body felt and looked horrible, not what professional officers should aspire to be even in retirement.

Ryan’s program is highly professional, focusing first on core strength, then legs and then upper body.  Quite the opposite of what one expects in a fitness program (build big biceps and chest) but, is exactly what is needed.  Ryan includes nutrition, vitamins, and ensures you follow the best exercise form to maximize your results.

During this process Ryan and I drew closer as friends. We discussed politics, our history and lots of war stories, some told in my book.  Other members of the gym saw us constantly chatting about a variety of subjects. Several were curious (especially Owen) and would come over ask Ryan about a particular subject and he would say “let’s ask Robert about that.”  Our workouts always ran late because I talk too much…(any of my wives or military superiors could attest to) but, mentoring is in the Army blood.

At the ninth month I had lost only 7lbs, but 14 pounds in body fat, augmenting 17 pounds in muscle mass!  Ryan intuitively knew something was off in my body. So, he referred me to a sports medicine clinic, a small adjustment and bang, weight started melting off and the muscle bulk up was HUGE!  My body reacted positively to having the right fuel.  Seeing the physical progress, Ryan augmented my diet, more proteins, and heavier weights.

After sixteen months of focused work, Ryan’s program paid off! I am down to 188 pounds, size 32 pants (down from 36+), my skeletal muscle mass is up 88 lbs, body fat % way down to 19%, BMI 28, and hungrier than ever as my Basal metabolic rate is 1863… Ryan you rock!

I am stronger, more focused, and back to fighting aptitude (attitude too).  If you are looking for a local gym with spirit, “get Unleashed.”

Joe Strada says, “Live Well, Die Strong…”  I shall my Italian Friend, and I shall never forget what you provide for the community.  “See you on the high ground someday…but not today.”

I would like to thank the Mayor of Manassas Park. THANK YOU for encouraging small business like Unleashed Strength and another neighborhood favorite: Preston’s Pub.  Many of our post workout fitness lunches were enjoyed at Preston’s!

Hmmm, Dear Editor what should we write our next letter about?

Robert is a retired US Army Officer and diplomat emeritus from the US Embassy Italy in “Roma Capitale.”  He loves and is muscular because of Unleashed Strength Gym.
